Experience the beautiful cool climate wines of Hemel-en-Aarde (‘Heaven-and-Earth’). The award-winning wines that thrive here are Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays. A combination of factors result in a memorable wine-driven experience not to be forgotten soon: top-class, quality wines, friendly hospitality, stellar mountain- and vineyard views and mouth-watering culinary offerings. No less than five different wine farms with tastings – all unique in their own way! Sit back and enjoy the experience while our guide leads you to the best wines of the valley.
Your first stop will be on top of the Kleinrivier Mountain, to take in the beautiful panoramic view of the whole of Walker Bay, and Hermanus below you.
Heading up the Hemel-en-Aarde valley, and after driving through some vineyards, you will stop at the trendsetting Hamilton Russel. At one point in time, it was the southern most vineyard in Africa. Enjoy the setting of the historic Cape Dutch building (tasting centre) next to a huge dam, surrounded by equally huge old trees whilst sipping on your award winning Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Next stop is at the very welcoming Sumaridge wine estate with their beautiful setting next to a dam. If the weather plays along, you can sit on the balcony overlooking the dam, with mountain views, or even in the shade of the beautiful trees next to the dam.
It even gets better – art sculptures and a fynbos garden welcomes you at Creation Wines. Here you will go on a cellar tour to learn more about the wine-making process. Sip some wine on the well-manicured lawn, or inside their modern and attractive tasting room. The extensive menu (quite a few options for the kiddos too) caters for all tastes and diets, and will leave you with a deep glowing feeling of content afterwards. Enjoy lunch here.
Wine tasting in a church? You bet. After lunch, stop at the chapel-like wine lounge of Ataraxia. The lounge is perched high on a hill, at the foot of the looming Babylonstoren mountain. Savour the exceptional wines whilst enjoying the art on the walls of a local artist.
The day ends with another highlight (if that’s even possible to single out one) – stop at a winery that’s a leader in producing world-class Pinot Noir wines. Enjoy the unique ambiance of the tasting room while sipping on your wine.
The day ends at the bottom of the Hemel-en-Aarde valley, at the Wine Village – they represent over 700 wine producers! This wine emporium has an immense selection of wines, spirits, craft beers and artisan gins. The wines from here are even shipped world-wide, door to door!
