Want to do something different? Get off the beaten track and hop onto the Overberg Backroads Experience for something truly unique. Explore the smaller, lesser known, but equally unique and quaint towns of the Overberg. There’s more out there than just Hermanus! Drop by one of the biggest farm stalls (padstal) in South Africa. End your trip sipping some top-tier wines from the Bot River region.
From Hermanus take a short drive to Stanford. Explore the town on foot. There are many great little coffee shops, stores with home-made baked goods and eateries. There are some art studios and cute little shops. Relaxed and serene are the perfect words to describe this little village where you are heartily welcomed wherever you go.
Just outside Stanford you will stop at Klein River Cheese. They know their cheese! These artisan cheeses have won awards internationally as well. You will get to taste some cheese, and have a chance to purchase some from the shop. There’s also the option of ordering the ‘Artisan Cheese Platter’ and having it picnic style outside on the grass, enjoying the relaxing farm-style atmosphere. You can also fill-up your own picnic basket with some local produce, wine, beer, and then obviously the artisanal cheese.
Next is the longer, but just as beautiful, drive to the small village of Greyton. It is South Africa’s ‘first transition town’ – they’re working together to “build a resilient, self-sustainable community which benefits everyone by providing security from rising costs in fuel, food and other essentials”. Sensational coffee (try Via’s…), fresh, wholesome- and delicious fare, an eclectic range of arts and crafts – you’ll find it all here. You’ll have some free time to wander around, explore, and have lunch – just be careful not to bump into a donkey or horse in the street…
After Greyton, you’ll quickly visit Genadendal next door. It is the oldest (dating back to 1738) Moravian Mission Village in Africa with quite an interesting history.
You’ll proceed to a South African favourite whilst on journeys and in need of refreshments or a break – a ‘padstal’. Padstal is the Afrikaans word for ‘farm stall’. This one is huge (one of the biggest in South Africa), and very unique in that it gives you such a wide variety of options… Freshly made coffee, biltong, cold meats, spices, baked goods, curios, home decor, antiques, locally made clothes & shoes – you can think of anything and you’ll most probably find it there. There’s also a restaurant. Dassiesfontein is definitely a find and not to be missed when passing by!
At the final stop, you will get to taste some of the best wines on offer from the Bot River wine ward at Gariëlskloof Wine Estate. Sit in the tastefully decorated wine lounge, or outside in the fresh air. You even have the opportunity to try their lovely olives and olive oil with bread. Platters can be arranged – a perfect accompaniment to the top-class wines you’ll be tasting.
A short coastal drive takes you back to Hermanus. This Overberg Backroads Experience will leave you with fond memories of the lesser known gems of the Overberg, and great stories to tell…
