- Food & Wine
Hermanus is the ‘capital’ of the Cape Whale Coast, and arguably the best place in the world for land-based whale watching. But, there’s more to Hermanus than just whales… Quaint little shops, beautiful art galleries, outdoor markets, numerous coffee shops, a wine route, beautiful hiking, loads of restaurant options – the list goes on.
After this tour, you will have a much better understanding of why Hermanus is such a sought after and popular destination for tourists – both local and international.
Start with a drive up to a viewpoint on the Kleinrivier Mountains that affords magnificent panoramic views of the whole Walker Bay area and Hemel-en-Aarde (“Heaven-and-Earth”) valley. A short drive takes you to the entrance of the Hemel-en-Aarde wine valley, where you will have a unique pairing of locally-made chocolate and wine. Enjoy the complimentary tastes, and how they each bring out and enhances the flavour of the other. A must stop is at the Wine Village, which represents more than 700 South African wine producers! Many spirits and craft beers are also available, with the very knowledgeable staff at hand if you have any questions. No wonder it’s regarded by some as the best wine emporium in South Africa…
You will proceed to the New Harbour where you’ll visit the Abagold abalone farm. Learn about this sought after delicacy, the farm, its influence on the community, the breeding process, the physical characteristics of the mollusc and more. The tour is very informative and interesting.
Time for lunch at a gem of a restaurant, literally on the ocean’s edge, for some feel good food. Enjoy your meal with the sound of the ocean as background music, and keep your eyes peeled – you might even spot some whales right from where you are sitting!
After lunch you will go on a leisurely eco-cruise to view the picturesque coastline and town of Hermanus from the sea. Look for aquatic life as you go – seals and dolphins often play and come close to the vessel.
[in season, June to early December: view the gentle giants of the ocean from closer by. After a short briefing on land, head out and try to spot some whales (they are quite busy creatures, so don’t always make an appearance…)]
Finish off this wonderful day, as the sun is getting lower, by going on a short and easy walk up a Koppie just outside the center of town for some magnificent 360° views of the whole Hermanus area – the Kleinrivier Mountains to the one side, and the ocean and beaches to the other. You’ll learn the interesting history of Hermanus and how things came to be what they are today.
Join us on this tour to experience the real Hermanus – you will not regret it!
